audiolaz Room

Questions and details.

What people ask before trying it, then the details, point by point. A question not answered here: the forum.

01Before you try

The first questions.

Is my phone enough?

Yes, to start. An iPhone corrects the whole range; another phone, the bass, where the room is heard most. For accurate treble, you need a measurement microphone (which one).

Does it work with my system?

Very likely. The corrector takes Roon, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, UPnP and every app on the Mac, and plays to a DAC, a Diretta target or your network players (the details). With Roon, the correction can also go through Roon’s own convolution, ROCK and Nucleus included (with Roon).

Do I need Roon?

No. Roon is one source among others: AirPlay, Spotify Connect, UPnP and the Mac’s apps go through the corrector the same way. If you have Roon, you choose: the corrector as a Roon zone, or Roon’s own convolution (the Roon guide).

What will I hear?

Tighter bass. In your room, where you sit, some bass notes swell and linger, others cancel. audiolaz Room calms the ones that swell and leaves the others alone. The extra bass no longer covers the rest: voices and instruments stand out. Compare for yourself with “No correction”, at the same volume.

Can I go back?

Yes, at any time: “No correction” is always there, at the same level. In Roon, the app also keeps Roon’s settings, and puts them back if a step fails.

What is “Centre on me”?

Sit wherever you like and make the gesture with the iPhone, from your seat: the stage comes back in front of you, the voice in the centre, the balance restored, without stopping the music. “Back to my measuring seat” restores the original setting. It is new, and in beta.

What is room correction?

Room correction measures what your room does to your speakers’ sound at your listening seat, then applies a filter that corrects the worst of it: mostly the bass notes that swell and linger. It complements acoustic treatment; it does not replace it.

What will it not do?

It does not replace treating the room: it calms a resonance at your seat, but a metre away the room rings as before. It cannot fill a null: where two paths of the sound cancel, boosting does nothing. It cannot repair a speaker, but it tells you if your two speakers differ.

02The corrector

One correction, for every source.

The corrector runs on the computer that stays at home, a Mac or a Linux machine, and applies your correction to everything that goes through.

Its inputs, its outputs

Inputs: Roon, as a zone of its own (through Roon’s Squeezebox support, up to 24 bit / 192 kHz) or directly on a streamer without Roon Server; AirPlay (16 bit / 44.1 kHz); Spotify Connect (Ogg Vorbis 320 kbit/s); UPnP/DLNA (up to 24 bit / 192 kHz), from Audirvāna, JRiver, BubbleUPnP or mConnect; on a Mac, every app through the “audiolaz” output (bit-perfect up to 32 bit / 768 kHz). The source started last plays.

Outputs: any output of the machine (USB, HDMI, S/PDIF, a DAC board); a Diretta target, on Linux; UPnP/DLNA and Squeezebox players, which receive the corrected music bit for bit, in 24 bit, at the track’s own rate; AirPlay devices (16 bit / 44.1 kHz, about 2 s late); audiolaz Link (in beta).

High resolution, and untouched without correction

Each track is corrected at its own sample rate. If your DAC takes it and the machine is up to it, the corrector upsamples up to 1411.2 / 1536 kHz. A limiter catches the rare peaks. On “No correction”, at 0 dB, the music passes as it is, bit for bit.

Apple TV: picture and sound together

The Apple TV’s sound goes over AirPlay through the corrector, corrected like your music. For the sync, the Apple TV plays a test pattern, the iPhone films the screen and listens from your seat, then the corrector sets itself: about a minute (how it is measured). 5.1 and 7.1 are received and mixed to stereo; as an option, “Dialogue” makes voices clearer.

Several rooms?

One corrector for several rooms, each with its own measurement and source: in development, not available yet.

Your DAC on another machine?

Add a machine from the app: the corrector, or an audiolaz Link receiver, goes on the machine beside your DAC. Roon is found by its address, across Wi-Fi and cable, or running in Docker.

With Roon

The corrector shows in Roon as a zone of its own, whatever your Core, ROCK and Nucleus included. You can also go through Roon’s convolution: audiolaz Room installs the filter by itself on a ROCK or a Nucleus, on a Linux Core (its password typed once in the app), or when Roon runs on the same Mac or PC. If Roon runs on another Mac or PC, you load the filter: MUSE → Convolution → Browse.

Volume: the app tells you how much Headroom to set in Roon, so the volume stays the same with and without the correction. When it installs the filter itself, it sets it for you.

03Measuring

What you need, and what the filter does.

What you need

A computer at home for the app: Mac (Apple silicon or Intel), Linux or Windows. For the corrector, a Mac, a Windows PC or a Linux machine that stays on, connected to your DAC or your network; on Windows it is new, and plays through a sound card or a USB DAC. A phone, in the browser or with the audiolaz Room app for iPhone. Optionally, a calibrated USB measurement microphone.

The filter

A minimum-phase FIR filter per sample rate. With a calibrated microphone it corrects the whole range: fully up to 18 kHz, fading out by 19 kHz. With an iPhone, the whole range too by default, fading out from about 13 kHz; above 4 kHz the iPhone’s treble is approximate (an option stops the correction at 4 kHz). With another phone, from 40 to 500 Hz.

By default, cuts go to 12 dB and boosts to 3 dB (2 dB with a phone). Nulls are left alone. Four sounds to choose from: Neutral, Balanced, Warm or Analogue.

Which measurement microphone?

Your iPhone is enough to start. For accurate treble, a calibrated USB microphone: the Dayton iMM-6C, USB-C, goes straight into the phone (iPhone 15 or later, or Android); the miniDSP UMIK-1, the reference, USB-B, needs a cable or a computer; the miniDSP UMIK-2 is the most accurate of the three. audiolaz Room reads each one’s calibration file, tied to its serial number. With a microphone, the measurement reaches lower in the bass and the app can align left and right in time.

We sell no hardware and earn nothing on these microphones.

Tools for your speakers

Left and right compared at 1 m, to see whether your two speakers differ; live tuning while the music plays; the subwoofer aligned with the speakers. Every sound plays at the same level, so the comparison is fair.

04Licence and data

Bought once, your data at home.

What if I don’t like it?

Measuring and the result are free: you see what the correction will do before you pay. To listen to it, you need a licence, with no subscription, refundable for 14 days, no questions asked.

Room or Room Plus?

Room measures and corrects: the filter, the four sounds, “No correction” beside them and, with a measurement microphone, your two speakers’ bass put back in phase at your seat. It installs into Roon, or exports as WAV files. Room Plus adds the corrector, which takes every source and plays to every output, and what it brings: Apple TV sync, audiolaz Link and “Centre on me”. You can start with Room and move to Room Plus later, on the same computer.

Can I move the licence to another computer?

Yes, three times on your own, two weeks apart: activate the same key on the new computer. Past that, write to contact@audiolaz.com and we will sort it out.

Where does my data go?

Recordings, rooms and filters stay on the computer running audiolaz Room. The licence key is checked once; after that, everything works offline. A Linux Core’s password is typed once: the app uses it to set up its own access, then forgets it.

How do I join the beta?

Apply with the form. The beta is open, on application: each tester accepted gets 30 days of listening, then a licence keeps the correction. Everyone gets an answer.

Where can I ask my own question?

On the forum, audiolaz.com/discussion. The person who makes audiolaz Room and its beta testers answer there, in public, so each answer serves the next person too.

Measure first, decide after.

Open beta, on application: 30 days of listening for each tester accepted. The store opens after.
